Garden consultation

You may not need a full redesign. You may only need a fresh pair of eyes and an honest conversation about what is possible.

What happens during a consultation

A garden consultation is a two-hour visit to your home, costing £300 + VAT. We walk through your garden together and I listen.

I'll give you honest, practical advice and ideas on how to get the best out of your existing layout, and I'll look at the things that might be overlooked: your soil, light, and drainage, and how they shape what's possible.

I listen to what you'd like to change, what isn't working, and what you'd love to have more of. I also look at things that often go unseen: soil condition, drainage, light patterns through the day, existing plants worth keeping, and the relationship between your garden and the rooms that open onto it.

By the end of the visit, you'll have a clear, practical picture of your options, whether that's a full redesign, a smaller change, or simply a more thoughtful use of what you already have.

A written summary follows after the visit. It's yours to keep and refer to, whether or not you decide to take things further.

There's no pressure to commit to anything. This is simply a chance to understand your garden better, and to feel clearer about what you'd like it to become.

She asked me good questions and really listened to my answers, to understand my requirements, preferences and how I want to use the garden.

I start by listening, properly

Before I offer a single suggestion, I want to understand what matters to you. What you love about your garden. What frustrates you. How you'd actually like to use it, and how much time you want to spend in it.

This kind of listening shapes every recommendation I make. It's also, clients often tell me, quite rare.

I also look at what most people miss. Soil condition. Drainage patterns. How the light moves through the day and how it changes between seasons. Where the wind comes from. Which existing plants are worth keeping and which are quietly failing. These details are invisible to most homeowners, but they shape every design decision I make.

Questions about the consultation

How much does a garden consultation cost in Yorkshire?

A garden consultation costs £300 + VAT. That covers a two-hour visit to your garden, a thorough assessment of your site, honest design advice, and a written summary afterwards. There's no obligation to go further.

How do I know if I need a consultation or a full design?

The consultation is always the right starting point. It gives us both the information we need. Many clients find the consultation itself gives them everything they need. Others use it as the foundation for a full design project. You do not have to decide anything until after we have met.

What happens after the consultation?

You receive a written summary within a few days. From there, the decision is entirely yours. If you'd like to explore a design project, the consultation counts as the first step. Nothing is wasted or repeated.

Will I get a planting list?

A detailed planting plan is part of the Silver and Gold packages, and a personalised plant list is available as an add-on to the consultation. Either way, I won't leave you without something useful to work from.

What happens if I want a full design after the consultation?

The consultation counts as the first step in any design project, so you won't be repeating yourself. Everything we discuss becomes the foundation of the design brief. It's a natural progression, not a fresh start.

What clients say on Google

After spending some time listening, looking at and discussing the planting area Sally produced a detailed breakdown and costing of all that would be involved in improving my garden.

Joy Sanderson, Google review

Working through these steps helped us work through our priorities and communicate our preferences. Sally’s objectivity provided us with invaluable insight and a new perspective.

Andrew Porter, Google review

Unlike other garden designers, Sally listened to our general ideas, and built on those, coming up with lots of great ideas that we'd never have thought of.
